What is a search prompt?

A search prompt is the question or phrase someone types into a generative AI engine, like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini, or Microsoft Copilot, to get an answer.

Unlike traditional search, where you type a keyword and get a list of links, AI engines respond with a single, direct, conversational answer often without the user clicking anywhere at all.

How does a generative AI engine process a prompt?
