How to use OtterlyAI in Claude and ChatGPT (MCP, Skills & Prompts)

What you can do with OtterlyAI in your AI assistant

Connect OtterlyAI to Claude or ChatGPT and ask questions about your AI search data in plain language: no exports, no spreadsheets. In about five minutes you can pull underperforming prompts, compare share of voice, run crawlability checks or generate a full client account review as a PDF.

Before you start:

  • Plan: MCP and API access are included on Standard, Premium and Enterprise plans. Trials also include MCP requests to test with.
  • Sign-in: the MCP uses your OtterlyAI login, not an API key.
  • Usage: every request the assistant makes to OtterlyAI counts toward your plan's monthly MCP limit. Check your usage under Plan usage in the Billing tab.
  • Permissions: read-only accounts can view data. Creating prompts, reports or audits (including crawlability checks) needs write permission.

Build your own GEO agent with skills

A skill is a saved workflow: instructions the assistant loads automatically when your request matches. The OtterlyAI connector gives the assistant your data; a skill tells it what to do with that data, the same way every time.

The same skill file works in both Claude and ChatGPT, so you build it once.

Make your own skill

You don't need to write any code. Describe the job you want done, and Claude or ChatGPT writes the skill for you. Both have a built-in skill creator.

  1. Describe what you want. In a chat with OtterlyAI switched on, say what the skill should do, which data it needs and what the result should look like. For example:

Help me build a skill called otterly-competitor-watch. Goal: every Monday I want to know if competitors gained ground on us in AI search. Data to use from the OtterlyAI: - Brand report [ID], [COUNTRY], last 7 days vs the 7 days before - Share of voice and brand coverage for my brand and [BRAND 1], [BRAND 2], [BRAND 3] - Prompts where a competitor is mentioned and we are not - The domains cited in those answers Output: a short summary (3 bullets), one table per competitor, and 3 actions for this week. Rules: ask before changing anything in OtterlyAI, and never estimate missing data. Ask me any questions you need first, then test the skill on my real data before giving me the file.
  2. Answer its questions and check the test run. The assistant may ask about your goals, then run the workflow once on your data. If something's off, say so, for example “Also include NSS” or “Make the summary shorter.”
  3. Save the skill. Ask: “Give me the final skill as a file I can upload.” Claude gives you a file to download. ChatGPT may add the skill to your Skills automatically; if it doesn't, download the file.
  4. Upload it. In Claude: Customize → Skills → + → Create skill → Upload skill. In ChatGPT: Plugins → Skills tab → Create → Upload from your computer. Skip this if ChatGPT already saved it.
  5. Use it. Start a new chat and type your trigger, for example “Run my competitor watch.” To change it later, ask: “Update my otterly-competitor-watch skill so it also covers Germany.”

What to include when you describe a skill: the goal, the exact metrics, the output format and any rules. The more specific you are, the more consistent the results.

Good skills share these things:

  • One job each. A weekly check and a client review are two skills, not one.
  • A clear trigger. The description says when to use it, for example “when the user asks for a weekly GEO check”.
  • Safety rules. “Ask before creating or deleting prompts” and “Don't estimate missing data”.

Prefer the official OtterlyAI Claude Skill? It uses the REST API with an API key (Standard plan and above). See the Claude Skill setup guide.

No Skills tab in ChatGPT? Your plan or admin hasn't enabled them. Paste the text of SKILL.md at the start of a chat with OtterlyAI switched on; it works the same, you just paste it each time.
